Djokovic Nearly Defaulted: One Angry Swing Away
Novak Djokovic quest for a 25th Grand Slam title almost came to an end despite the fact that he won his third round match at the Australian Open 2026. The reason he was almost defaulted because in anger he swung a ball and it almost ended up hitting a ball girl. Now technically how the rules work is that if you take out your frustration in any manner like that and if the ball actually ends up hitting someone on the court whether it be uh the ball girls or boys or even one of the line umpires then you are defaulted the umpire has enough right to actually disqualify you from the match and then of course by extension the tournament.

And it’s a bit of a throwback moment really for Novak Djokovic because you’d remember that in 2020 that was exactly how he ended up getting knocked out of the US Open when in anger he swung hard at a ball that ended up hitting a linesman on the neck and because of that he ended up getting defaulted out of the tournament despite the fact that he was actually at that point in time one of the favourites to be winning the US Open. So a bit of a scare for Novak. luckily one which he managed to evade and even he admitted afterwards that it was something that he probably shouldn’t have done.
