OnePlus 10 Pro: Already Launched…But Why Can’t You Buy It Yet?!

Hey, what’s up? and you might not know this, but the OnePlus 10 Pro is here—or rather, *almost* here. OnePlus has been on a bit of a strange path lately—something I’ve discussed before—but this is their weirdest move yet. I say it’s “almost here” because you are watching this video on YouTube, which doesn’t work in China; yet, this phone has officially launched *only* in China. So, right where you’re watching this, it isn’t actually available yet—though hopefully, it will see an international launch sometime later this year. I was able to get my hands on this phone thanks to our friends over at d brand.

OnePlus 10 Pro: Is This Still OnePlus…Or Just an Oppo in Disguise?!

However, if you want to buy one yourself, you’ll have to import it from a site like 28 Mobile. And that’s not all: the software running on this device isn’t the Oxygen OS that OnePlus fans in many regions have come to know and love. So, simply put—even though the box bears the OnePlus name, logo, and signature red cable—the OnePlus 10 Pro feels much more like an Oppo phone than any of its predecessors. You’ve likely already seen all the specs, teasers, and other details leading up to this phone’s launch—and I’ll get to all of that in just a moment—but the most important thing to note is that this phone—this very unit right here—is actually running on Oppo’s software.

OnePlus 10 Pro Shock: No OxygenOS…Just ColorOS and Bloatware?!

That means it features Color OS—the very same Color OS you’d find on an Oppo phone; specifically, it’s Color OS 12.1. So, the Oxygen OS that has been such a defining part of the OnePlus experience for years—and which I myself have really enjoyed in the past—is nowhere to be found here. Instead, it comes with several stock apps built by Oppo, as well as numerous unfinished menus that haven’t been translated into English. Furthermore, it includes a number of pre-installed Chinese apps that you can’t even disable.

OnePlus 10 Pro Reality Check: Usable…But Is the Experience Broken?!

It is quite evident that this phone was not designed for sale in other regions. Its default browser isn’t particularly impressive either—I mean, it generally functions reasonably well, and it does offer a number of customization features. I think its ‘wallpaper color picker’ is excellent, and I have even managed to run Google apps on it—with the exception of Google Assistant—so while I am able to use the device, it doesn’t quite deliver a completely ideal (or perfect) user experience.

OnePlus 10 Pro: Will OxygenOS Return…Or Is This the New Reality?

So, amidst all of this, the biggest question that arises is: will this phone ever receive Oxygen OS? Whether or not it will feature Oxygen OS—when it eventually sees a potential international launch—remains unknown; this has not been confirmed yet. We simply do not have an answer to this at the moment. And even if it isn’t absolutely perfect, truth be told, Oxygen OS on this device feels remarkably similar to Color OS.
