OnePlus 8 Pro at $899: True Flagship Upgrade…Or Too Expensive Now?!
What’s up, guys? I’m Anurag. I hope everyone reading this blog post is doing well and staying healthy. Even though we’re all stuck at home and indoors right now, I’ve still managed to bring you a review of the OnePlus 8 Pro. It starts at a price of $899—which is quite steep for a OnePlus phone. With this device, the company has truly stepped into the realm of bona fide ‘flagship’ smartphones. But—and this is a big *but*—it comes packed with new features, such as wireless charging.
OnePlus 8 Pro: Best Display Ever…But What Really Changed?!
It boasts one of the best displays currently available on the market, and it features the new Snapdragon 865 processor with 5G support. So, let’s dive in and explore it in detail. With the OnePlus 8 Pro, the company has introduced some subtle changes to its ‘brand identity.’ The branding on the back of the phone is now written in all capital letters, while the font for the number ‘1’ within the logo has been slightly updated. Visually, the phone doesn’t look drastically different from the OnePlus 7 Pro, but there are certainly some tweaks to its design.
OnePlus 8 Pro Design: More Comfortable…But That Camera Bump Is a Problem?!
It feels distinct in the hand, as its edges feel more rounded compared to the 7 Pro—and that’s a welcome change. I feel they’ve added just the right amount of curvature in all the right places, making it much more comfortable to hold. The camera setup is now wider and taller than before. Additionally—thanks to the new camera sensors—the camera bump protrudes significantly further out than it did on previous models. Consequently, if you use the phone while it’s resting on a table, it will definitely wobble back and forth. The selfie camera is now housed within a ‘punch-hole’ cutout; this means it no longer pops up from the top edge like it did on the 7 Pro—a feature I’ll miss a little, as it was quite impressive.
OnePlus 8 Pro: Stunning Design with IP68…But Those Curved Edges Hide a Flaw?!
However, thanks to this design shift, the phone is now IP68 certified for water resistance. While I typically prefer phones with glossy finishes and shiny, reflective glass, this device’s ‘Deep Blue’ colour and ‘Soft Matte’ finish make it one of the most beautiful-looking phones available today. This particular shade has been dubbed ‘Ultramarine Blue,’ and when light hits it, it takes on a texture that looks exactly like satin. The curved edges of the screen are more pronounced than before, creating a distinct drop-off at the sides—something that wasn’t quite as evident on the 7 Pro. This doesn’t bother me as much as it might bother some of you. Can you spot the slight ‘distortion’ (colour shift) right at the very edges of the screen? It’s not an issue for me.
OnePlus 8 Pro Display: Insanely Bright…But Is It the Best Yet?!
The design remains largely consistent with last year’s model, and I believe that was a smart decision on the company’s part. OnePlus employs a design language that is distinctly its own, avoiding any attempt to mimic other brands. The 8 Pro features a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a QHD+ resolution and a slightly taller 20:9 aspect ratio. Consequently, it is just as wide as the 7 Pro, but slightly longer. This is the brightest display ever featured on a OnePlus phone; in our tests, its brightness peaked at 888 nits. To be honest, it ranks among the brightest displays I have ever used, and I never encountered any difficulty using the 8 Pro, even on bright, sunny days.
