The OnePlus Nord 5 is a feature-packed ‘upper mid-range’ phone, priced at around $500; and to be honest, there is no shortage of such phones this year. Nevertheless, it stands out from the rest, thanks to a powerful chipset, a large 144 Hz display, and a high-resolution selfie camera. The design of the Nord 5 is quite different from last year’s model.
OnePlus Nord 5: New ‘Plus Key’ & Fresh Design…But Why Drop the Alert Slider?!
It is a large phone, designed around a sizable screen. This time around, instead of an all-metal body, the phone utilizes plastic for both the back panel and the frame. Even so, the phone looks quite stylish, and its ‘frosted finish’ gives it a very smooth feel to the touch. In place of the ‘Alert Slider,’ OnePlus has introduced a new ‘Plus Key’ this time. You can still use it to switch the phone to ‘Silent Mode.’
OnePlus Nord 5: 144Hz Beast Display…But Is IP65 a Dealbreaker?!
However—much like the iPhone’s ‘Action Button’—you can also assign various other functions to this key, such as opening the camera, turning on the flashlight, or launching an AI tool. One thing that hasn’t changed is its ‘Ingress Protection’ rating. Just like last year, it carries an IP65 rating this time around. This means the phone is not protected against full submersion in water or high-pressure water jets—protection that you often find in many competing phones. With a 6.83-inch screen, the Nord 5’s display is significantly larger than that of previous Nord models. Furthermore, this OLED panel features a high refresh rate of 144 Hz and is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i. Thanks to its slim bezels and excellent sharpness, the display looks quite stunning. It also supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision video playback.
OnePlus Nord 5: 144Hz Hype…But Why Can’t You Actually Use It?!
When it comes to brightness, we measured its peak brightness at approximately 800 nits using the manual slider—a significant improvement over last year’s model. In Auto Mode, the maximum brightness is even higher, reaching levels exceeding 1,300 nits. This delivers an excellent viewing experience for outdoor use.
However, we were left slightly disappointed regarding the phone’s 144 Hz refresh rate—especially given the extensive marketing the company had dedicated to it. In our experience, the phone tops out at 120 Hz to ensure smooth swiping and scrolling; when the device is idle (not in use), it drops down to 60 Hz to conserve energy. Yet, we were unable to find any specific mode or scenario where the screen actually operated at 144 Hz. This includes gaming as well.
