OnePlus 8T: Premium Feel, Flagship Specs…But Is It Really a Killer?

Hey, what’s up, guys? This is the OnePlus 8T, and it represents yet another attempt by the company to create a premium—yet “flagship-killing”—device. It certainly isn’t cheap, but it packs a host of features that you simply won’t find in your average mid-range phone. So, let’s dive into our full review to see exactly what it has to offer. The OnePlus 8T is a premium mid-range device boasting flagship-level specifications, along with a truly stunning design. The specific model we have here comes in a glossy and captivating Aquamarine Green finish. The phone’s curved back panel is constructed from Gorilla Glass 5, while its matte aluminum frame feels incredibly comfortable to hold.

OnePlus 8T: Flat Display Upgrade…But Where Did Waterproofing Go?!

Gorilla Glass 5 also serves to protect the display on the front of the device. Compared to the OnePlus 8 and other previous models, you’ll notice one distinct difference here: the screen isn’t curved, but rather completely flat—a design choice that some users might actually prefer. Aside from that, however, it looks and feels very much like other OnePlus phones; it even features OnePlus’s signature hardware slider for controlling notification alerts. Unlike the OnePlus 8 Pro, the 8T lacks any official waterproofing—unless, of course, you purchase the T-Mobile exclusive model, which carries an IP68 rating.

OnePlus 8T Display: 120Hz Smoothness…But Is It Always That Fast?!

Otherwise, you’ll have to make do with the basic splash-proofing built into the phone. The OnePlus 8T features a 6.55-inch AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution. Just like the 8 Pro, it offers a super-fast 120Hz refresh rate and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. The result is that moving elements on the screen—such as when you swipe or scroll—appear significantly smoother compared to panels with 60Hz or 90Hz refresh rates. Furthermore, this screen is also more responsive. However, this display does have a few minor shortcomings. To conserve battery power, the refresh rate automatically drops to 60Hz when you stop interacting with the screen—as you can observe here.

OnePlus 8T Display: 120Hz Power…But Why Is Everything Locked at 60FPS?!

Yet, if the screen brightness is set below 50% or if you have enabled ‘Dark Mode,’ the refresh rate remains locked at a constant 120Hz. It is also worth noting that certain applications—such as YouTube, Google Maps, or full-screen video playback—will always operate at 60Hz. Moreover, despite featuring such an impressive high-refresh-rate display, the OnePlus 8T currently allows for high-refresh-rate gaming in only two titles: PUBG and Fortnite. All other games—even those capable of supporting higher frame rates—remain capped at 60fps. Setting these points aside, this OLED display is quite excellent.

OnePlus 8T Display: Bright, Accurate…But Is It Truly Flagship Level?!

With a few minor colour adjustments within the settings, the visuals can appear remarkably accurate. Its maximum brightness is also impressive—reaching up to 500 nits via the manual slider, and exceeding 800 nits in auto mode when in bright lighting conditions. All in all, it delivers a solid performance.
