This powerful OnePlus 8 smartphone will feature 48 MP Camera, a powerful battery, 8 GB RAM
OnePlus 8: Still a Flagship Killer…Or Just Another Flagship Now?
Hey, what’s up, guys? And this is the OnePlus 8. Now, if OnePlus hadn’t also launched the OnePlus 8 Pro, this would be the phone that OnePlus would call a ‘flagship killer,’ right? But we can all see that OnePlus is slowly drifting away from that direction. They now have a different slogan—’Fast and Smooth’—and you can tell they are moving away from that ‘flagship killer’ narrative, because now they actually make a flagship phone. But this is exactly what I would expect from the OnePlus we’ve always known.
OnePlus 8: Flagship Power with Hidden Compromises…Worth $699?!
So, this ‘Interstellar Glow’ variant of the OnePlus 8 starts at $699 and packs all the latest, high-end specs you need for snappy performance: a Snapdragon 865 (which includes a 5G modem), 8 or 12 GB of fast RAM, UFS 3.0 storage, and Wi-Fi 6. It’s all great stuff; it is undeniably a fast phone, and I really liked it. However, to keep the price down, some compromises were made. I’ll be comparing it quite extensively to the OnePlus 8 Pro, so if you haven’t seen that previous video yet, hit the ‘Like’ button first; and if you want to watch that video to get the full picture, it’s available as well.
OnePlus 8: What They Removed to Cut the Price Will Surprise You!”
But here’s the story: if you worked for OnePlus and were tasked with building a phone priced between $900 and $1000, you’d probably think, “Okay, what can we strip out of this device to significantly lower the price? But at the same time, we still need to deliver an experience that feels just like a flagship phone.” So, what would you do? Well, that is exactly what they did. First off, its overall form factor is slightly smaller. That’s not to say it’s a small phone by any means; it’s actually still quite large.
OnePlus 8 Display & Design: Lighter, Brighter…But What’s the Catch?!
It features a 6.55-inch display, making it slightly taller even than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. So, while it isn’t exactly small, it is certainly a bit more compact compared to the 8 Pro. And it is undeniably lighter as well; I found it to feel quite light in the hand. On paper, its exact weight is 180 grams, and I found it to be very comfortable to hold. Next, let’s talk about the display itself. It still houses an optical fingerprint reader underneath. It remains HDR10+ certified, boasts superb colour accuracy, and is significantly brighter than last year’s model—which is a very important improvement.
OnePlus 8: 90Hz vs 120Hz—Can You Actually Tell the Difference?!
It remains clearly visible even in bright outdoor lighting, though its resolution is now 1080p rather than 1440p. This is a sensible move—one they have made before. Additionally, the refresh rate is now 90Hz instead of 120Hz. I would love to conduct a ‘blind test’ on this, but as I’ve mentioned previously, I can personally perceive the difference between 90Hz and 120Hz; however, the distinction is quite subtle and requires very close observation to spot.
OnePlus 8 Display: Still Smooth…But No Longer Special?!
Nevertheless, I would still choose either of these options over 60Hz, as the difference between 60Hz and these higher rates is clearly visible to the eye. So, it still qualifies as a ‘high refresh rate’ screen. It is a decision that not only saves costs but also feels entirely justified. The screen remains incredibly smooth and highly responsive. We have observed that other phones are now offering ‘high refresh rate’ capabilities at lower price points, so in that sense, this phone no longer feels quite as unique or exceptional as it once did. However, that is not a complaint.
