Audi Crooks STANDS ON BUSINESS after 47-PT game

Now, let’s storm into the world of women’s basketball. Iowa State basketball star Audi Crooks is taking the season by storm. Crooks is the leading scorer in all of women’s college basketball, averaging over 27 points per game. She has scored in double figures in 76 consecutive games—the longest active streak in NCAA women’s basketball. In one 43-point performance, Crooks achieved this feat in just 20 minutes of play while shooting 78% from the field. Indeed, she is the only Division I player in the last 25 years to have recorded three career games in which she scored 40 or more points while shooting 75% or better from the field. Most recently—just last Sunday—she broke her own Iowa State single-game scoring record by dropping 47 points in a 106-95 victory over Indiana.

She shot 19-of-25 from the floor and went 9-of-11 from the free-throw line—both of which also stand as Iowa State single-game records. So, let’s give a warm welcome to the “walking scoring machine,” Audi Crooks. Audi, I just mentioned that you recently scored 47 points—a career-high for you, and a school record as well. I’m curious to know if you have an answer to this question: Who can stop you? Well, you know, that’s a question I’ve seen asked online quite a few times. I’m sure there are people out there who *could* stop me, but we haven’t found anyone yet! So, I’m actually really excited about the possibility of facing some stiff competition down in the paint. That’s it—end of story. I really liked that answer.

What was working best for you that day? To be honest, we were simply doing whatever the opposing team was giving us the opportunity to do. So, Indiana was the team against whom we played that 47-point game. At the start of the game, they were playing us one-on-one in the paint. My teammates did a tremendous job of recognizing that we had an advantage in that area. Consequently, I was able to put up a strong performance in the mid-range and in the paint right from the beginning of the game. Later on, once they started hitting three-pointers, they weren’t able to double-team me. So, all the credit really goes to my teammates and my coaches—who, you know, recognized their game plan and figured out how we could capitalize on it.

Alright, so that’s how it went down; and a few weeks ago, you scored 43 points in just 20 minutes—as I mentioned earlier. Tell us about that feeling when you’re in that kind of “zone.” Yeah, it’s sort of like reaching a “peak flow state.” It feels like nothing else matters. You are just immersed in the game; you are completely in the moment. I feel a real sense of connection with my teammates when—you know—we’re able to establish that chemistry. When they’re able to deliver those assists. So, for me, it truly is a very natural flow state, and basketball feels really, really easy. You don’t even have to think about it. So, yeah, that’s how I’d describe it.

Yeah, you certainly make it look easy. Let’s talk about your team. You’ve gotten off to a fantastic 9-0 start and are currently ranked 10th in the nation. How would you describe the vibe of this Iowa State women’s basketball team? We’re a fun team, but we are definitely a team that shouldn’t be taken lightly. We have some new players and some returning players who have elevated their game, and the thing is, we are truly very diverse. I don’t think our team’s depth has ever been quite this extensive before. We can shoot the ball; we can score at every level. We maintain our pace in transition, get transition buckets, and knock down three-pointers.

So, I think we are a team that is truly very difficult to guard because we have such a diverse group of players. Alright—knowing that, historically, Iowa State has only advanced as far as the “Elite Eight” in the tournament—what do you think is the ceiling for this team this season? I absolutely would not set a ceiling for my team. I don’t believe in limits. I don’t believe in putting anyone in a box—not myself, and certainly not my team. That is something I would never, ever do.

So, I think—you know—the sky is the limit for us. We are our own biggest enemies; if anyone is going to beat us, it will probably be ourselves. So, the hope is simply that we keep moving forward with this positive energy and these wins, and look toward the future while continuing to make our team even better. Obviously, matchups like the “Sweet 16,” “Elite Eight,” and “Final Four” are coming up in March. That would be great, but I don’t want to confine my team’s potential within any limits. Exactly—we have no limits. I like that.
