Well, that wasn’t exactly a great game—Athletic Club 1, Mallorca 1. That’s how things ended as we welcome Luis Garcia back to La Liga this season. However, I’m afraid Luis has to take a back seat today, as we need to introduce you to our new La Liga reporter who has bravely made the trip out to Spain. Without further ado, joining us is the professional himself: Adrian Healy. Adrian, the very first game you cover turns out to be a load of rubbish—I blame you! Yes, yes, it really was a drab affair. Wasn’t it just utterly dull? But oh, Mr. Thomas, Mr. Nicol—it is an absolute pleasure! It’s been a very long time.
I never thought I’d be speaking to you next from this magnificent city of Valencia, but here I am, and it feels great to be here. You do excellent match analysis; I really enjoyed it. Yeah, yeah, alright—oh, you want some match analysis? I’ll give you some! Yes, we aren’t just here for the scenery—not for long, anyway. It seemed like, out on the pitch—as Stevie mentioned—Athletic Bilbao just didn’t really get going. They didn’t click for the first 30 minutes or so, and then they went and scored with their very first shot. It felt—to me, at least—almost like a dress rehearsal; almost as if the season hadn’t quite kicked off properly yet. And you know, it certainly gave them plenty to think about.
Didn’t it, in the end? I don’t think a point was a bad result for Athletic Bilbao, all things considered. But I still feel they are a team poised to make some waves this season—especially having managed to retain Nico Williams; that’s a huge deal, just as Adrian pointed out. Luis, you can really tell that the players are still operating at about 50 or 60 percent—they aren’t anywhere near their full match fitness levels just yet. Yes, absolutely. And you have to remember, it is the first game of the season; generally speaking, you don’t see much precision at this stage these days. It is no longer like it was 15 years ago—a time when you had the luxury of working on your physical conditioning, refining your tactical system, and defining your desired style of play ahead of the season opener.
Nowadays, it has become more about simply playing matches and trying to generate revenue to build a strong squad. Consequently, you can clearly see a lack of both fitness and quality; players tire out very quickly during games, and the overall standard of play suffers—as was evident in this match, which certainly wasn’t a classic. It must be said that we know Athletic Club isn’t going to remain the team we saw today; they still have to find their rhythm and build momentum, just as they did last year. Nico Williams is likely to be their most crucial player; we spent the entire preseason discussing whether he would be joining Barcelona, but ultimately, he stayed put.
Today, he delivered a superb performance in the second half—creating several good chances and coming close to scoring another goal alongside Ala. So, it’s a good result—a valuable point earned. Yes, indeed, a point apiece. In the earlier fixture, Real Betis faced Girona, and that match followed a somewhat similar trajectory; perhaps, in the end, Girona deserved to take a point away from it. So, it finished Betis 1, Girona 1. Luis, you were on commentary duty for this game on ESPN Deportes; how would you sum it up for us? Yes, exactly that. I felt Real Betis got off to a great start, scoring from that corner kick, but from that moment on, the game was entirely dominated by Girona.
Betis sat back, waiting for an opportunity to launch a counter-attack and score a second goal—something that never materialized. Ultimately, in the second half, Girona—under the astute guidance of their coach, Míchel—pushed forward effectively. We saw young talents like Mhoy combining brilliantly to secure that equalizer; I certainly feel they deserved to take at least a point from the match. They tried very hard in the second half—they enjoyed a great deal of possession and created numerous chances—but Real Betis are truly dangerous on the counter-attack. This isn’t the Girona side we’re accustomed to seeing; we still have to try and adapt to their current style. However, this is no longer the magnificent Girona we witnessed last year; too many pieces are missing. We’ll just have to wait and see what they can achieve this season.
Yes, indeed—that is clearly their predicament. That squad, which took everyone by surprise last season, has completely disintegrated; I imagine they’ll be quite pleased to walk away from Seville with a point. Oh, absolutely. I mean, I do feel a bit sorry for them. In a way—and Míchel has already emphasized this in some of his pre-season comments—he is concerned. And rightly so, because this isn’t going to be the same team—how could it be? They did well to secure a point, though, and you know that there will be plenty of teams this season who visit this ground and fail to take even a single point. But for Girona, repeating what they accomplished last year would be nothing short of a miracle—and I just don’t see that happening.
