Konnor Griffin is expected to debut with the Pirates ahead of their home opener Friday!
Hey, we’ve got some breaking news here just into us. Uh, this one from Jason Mackey. The Pirates are promoting Connor Griffin for Friday’s home opener against the Orioles. And good for you, Connor. In our previous segment, we talked about Connor Griffin and the possible extension with the Pittsburgh Pirates. I’m wondering if reading the tea leaves. I’m sure that’ll get announced here in a minute, too. I was at Pirates camp. First of all, he was the talk of all the camps, not just Pirates. Remember a couple years ago when we talked about it you you were you said it he should have been the first pick.
No disrespect to Travis Bazano who’s going to play in the big leagues a long time. We could go back and look at the footage. I mean I had a chance to to meet this guy at 16 17 years old and spend some time with him. His agent Joey Divine is a good buddy of mine and brought him up to hit with me and Brian McCann before his junior year of high school and it was ridiculous. this. I had never seen an athlete look like this in the big age. And then there was talk going into the draft, I thought he should have been the first pick. He fell to ninth overall because of some swing and miss.
You got to understand what these young kids are facing on the showcase circuit going into the draft. Everyone’s throwing 95 to 97. So, there’s going to be some swing and miss with some of these high school kids. But, you bet on the character and you bet on the tool set. Yeah. And there’s like uh two people in the league that have these tools. It’s crazy. Better makeup. He changes what they’re about. Listen, he could struggle, but eventually he’s going to figure it out and he is going to be a franchise pillar for this organization. Why not make the team out of Could it be because this contract was in the works? Is that I mean, that’s complete speculation.
I’m just wondering if that’s That is definitely fair to speculate on, but to that was in the works and that’s why know that. But, uh, happy for him, happy for his family. Dad’s amazing. Gets it. And and and the shortstop position in the early part of the season, that’s been an area of need that that position has struggled early for the Pittsburgh. And truth be told, coming out of high school, I thought he was going to center field. I mean, he’s six, he’s every bit at 64, 65. He’s a big human being. And to stand at shortstop and all the metrics support him staying there. He wants to stay there. I I Yeah. Yeah. So, congrats. Pirates games just got a lot more interesting.
