Damian Lillard grew up a Carmelo Anthony fan.
Damon, what are your thoughts on the points raised by the commenters? As I’ve mentioned before, I am completely in favor of this. I feel we are currently in a situation where several of our players are sidelined with injuries. I believe he can help us with his physical stature, his ability to create space on the court, and his shooting prowess. He represents another option—a player who can single-handedly turn the tide of a game, excels at rebounding, and certainly does not lack experience. He is a tremendous player, regardless of how his performance may have been over the last few years in Houston or OKC.
I don’t think he was ever truly in poor form; I believe he can still make a valuable contribution to our team. And frankly, given our current situation, we aren’t really in a position to be picky or complain about this. He is a Hall of Famer and is still capable of playing at a high level. So, the hope is that his arrival will inject new life into the team and help us move forward in the right direction. Have you had a chance to speak with him yet? Yes, I actually spoke with him just last night. That said, we’ve had numerous conversations in the past as well. We talked quite a bit during the summer when he was being traded away from New York. We also spoke when he was leaving OKC. Circumstances at the time didn’t allow for things to work out, but this time around, our team needed him, and it presented a great opportunity for him as well—so everything fell into place this time. Did you ask him how he feels about joining a new team?
Yes, he seemed quite excited. Naturally, considering the circumstances he’s been through—the abrupt manner in which he was sidelined, and the fact that his departure from his previous team didn’t unfold the way he had hoped—he was clearly very enthusiastic about this new opportunity. He was genuinely happy about the prospect of being able to make a real contribution to our team. It’s not as if he joined the team merely for the sake of joining; he came to help our team. Nor is it the case that he joined a struggling squad; he has become part of an excellent team. We certainly don’t consider ourselves to be weak in any way. This is a win-win situation for both parties. When I spoke with him, he seemed quite excited about it and fully ready to play. Did you offer him any advice this time around, just as you did previously?
The last two times we spoke, I did offer him a few suggestions. But to be honest, you can’t really be upset with a player if they choose a different—and perhaps better—option or situation for themselves. As it happens, we currently have two players on our roster who didn’t initially choose to join us—in fact, there are even more than that. So, in that regard, he fits into our team perfectly. Many of his former teammates are here as well, so why wouldn’t we bring him in? He and LeBron were both in the same draft class. Everyone was on the “LeBron train” (meaning they were huge fans of LeBron). I was a massive fan of LeBron myself, but I always felt that “Belo” was an exceptional player, too. I’ve always admired his game. That’s why I think bringing him onto the team is going to be incredibly exciting.
His arrival will inject a fresh surge of energy and enthusiasm into the squad. Furthermore, having him present in the locker room will be immensely beneficial for our young players—after all, he’s an even better player than I am. Speaking of his capabilities—and particularly considering how the Raptors have played recently—I feel we need a player who doesn’t have to shoulder the entire burden alone, but rather another presence on the court who can contribute significantly to our offensive game. And in terms of respect, I believe that opposing teams and players will hold him in very high regard. Do you happen to know what kind of training “Dame” (Damian Lillard) is currently undergoing, or what he’s been up to lately? Because people are eager to know what kind of physical shape he is currently in.
Yes, videos and photos of his training are available on the internet. You can see that, as a professional and a ‘Hall of Fame’ player, he has made it clear that he still wants to play in the NBA. He wasn’t sitting at home on the couch waiting for a job; rather, he was continuously preparing himself. So, when the opportunity to play arose, he arrived fully prepared. I expect that he will join the team in peak condition. And I, too, am very excited to be a part of this entire process. I know that he is still an exceptional player.
